How To Make Spring Cleaning Fun
Spring is finally here. We have lighter days, warmer weather and blossom beginning to bloom. While animals emerge from hibernation, you may have been feeling the itch to sort through and clean your home.
Through winter, we tend to accumulate clutter for many reasons. You may have received Christmas presents that you didn’t know what to do with, bought lots of new things because you’re stuck at home, or maybe you just felt an impulse to nest – a feeling that has all but disappeared since spring arrived.
Spring is the perfect time to declutter your home – front to back and top to bottom. This season represents the turn of the year, a time for renewal, so why not renew and refresh your home with this handy guide!
Is spring cleaning necessary?
There are many good reasons to do a spring clean. After the year of hand sanitiser and surface cleaners (thank you 2020), we have seen more clearly than ever how important it is to stay clean. Spring cleaning is necessary because it makes it so much easier to keep your home safe, clean and hygienic.
Beyond health reasons, spring cleaning feels great. Consider it to be a bit like a detox; you’re removing unnecessary items and making space for new things. Have a clean and tidy home can boost your mood, increase positivity and could even reduce stress.
When should you start spring cleaning?
March is the most popular month for starting a spring clean. With the last of the winter months out the way, March is the first sign of brighter days. It’s the perfect time to blow off those cobwebs (literally) and get moving again. However, if you don’t manage to do it by March, that’s okay too! Even though spring is in the name, you can do a thorough clean any time of the year.
6 Tips for decluttering your home:
Work on one room at a time.
This is vital so that you don’t feel overwhelmed by the work you have to do. If you focus solely on a single room, you can make sure each one is done to the highest standard. By the time you’ve finished, your full home will look pristine.
Don’t forget your cupboards.
Out of sight doesn’t always mean out of mind. Try not to take clutter from the room and shove it into a cupboard to forget about. You can rest assured it will come back out. If you organise everything (the contents of your cupboards included), it will be much easier to maintain in the long run.
Be strict with yourself.
It can be difficult to let go of items that you’ve had for a long time. Unless it holds some sentimental value, try to be strict with yourself. This can start with asking yourself: “Have I used this in the last 6 months?” If the answer is no, it’s time to get rid of it.
A good trick for deciding which clothes you should keep: Hang all your clothes with the hanger facing out of the cupboard towards yourself. When you wear something, hang it back up with the hanger facing into the cupboard and away from you. After a few weeks, you will see which clothes you no longer wear by which hangers are still facing out.
Recycle or donate.
Depending on the type of item you’re getting rid of, decide whether you want to recycle or donate. Do some research before you decide what to do. While they are both great options for combatting waste, they do have some downfalls too. Oxfam has a Wastesaver programme which prevents donated clothes from going to landfill.
Make the most of your space.
So, you’ve gone through your home and tidied up, but the room still looks cluttered. What can you do? Make the most of your storage space! Sometimes we don’t realise how inefficient our storage is until we’ve gone through and tried to organise our things.
There are many storage solutions out there for you to try. They are fantastic for utilising every inch of space you have. If you have empty wall space, you could put up some shelves. The space underneath your coffee table or bed could be used as storage.

Create a spring cleaning checklist.
A checklist helps you to break down mammoth tasks into digestible pieces. If you take things one step at a time, you can stay organised and use your time efficiently. If you’re stuck for what to put on the checklist, or if you’re worried you might miss something off, print one out! This checklist from Merry Maids is a great example.
